What I Built, What They Took, and What Is in the Sky

Engineering, Seizure, and the Objects Nobody Can Explain

By Nikola Tesla, The Man Who Lit the World

I have been dead since January 7, 1943. In the eighty-three years since, my name has become attached to theories I did not propose, devices I did not build, and conspiracies I did not participate in. The internet has made me a saint of the fringe. The genius who was "silenced" because his inventions threatened the powerful. Some of that is true. Most of it is wrong in the details while being right about the shape.

I would like to set the record straight. Not to debunk, because the real engineering is stranger than the myths, but to separate what I actually did from what people imagine I did. The facts are more interesting than the folklore. They always are.

The Death Ray That Was Not a Ray

In 1934, I described a device I called teleforce. The newspapers called it a "death ray." I did not correct them, because publicity was the only currency I had left, and a man living on credit in a hotel room cannot afford to be precise with journalists.

Here is what teleforce actually was.

It was a particle beam accelerator. A device that accelerated tiny particles of tungsten or mercury to enormous velocities, one forty-eighth of the speed of light, and projected them in a concentrated stream. The particles would carry enough kinetic energy to bring down an aircraft at two hundred miles or destroy an army at a distance.

The device had four components, and I described all of them publicly:

  1. An open-ended vacuum tube. This was the key innovation. Every vacuum tube in 1934 had a sealed end, a thin window through which the beam had to pass, which limited the energy you could push through it. I designed a tube that maintained a vacuum with no physical barrier at the exit. The beam left the tube without passing through anything. I achieved this using a high-velocity air stream at the exit that acted as a seal. Air pushing inward faster than vacuum could leak outward.

  2. A mechanism to generate very high voltages. I had been building these since 1891. My Van de Graaff-type generator could produce potentials in the range of fifty million volts. This was the engine.

  3. A method of intensifying and amplifying the force. The geometry of the accelerating chamber focused the particles into a tight stream.

  4. A means of directing the stream. Electromagnetic steering, the same principle used in every cathode ray tube and, today, in every particle accelerator at CERN or Fermilab.

That is the device. No magic. No new physics. An extension of principles I had been demonstrating for forty years. The open-ended vacuum tube was the only piece that was genuinely novel, and I had working prototypes of the concept.

Could it have worked? The physics says yes. Whether I could have built a deployable weapon with 1930s materials and manufacturing is a harder question, and honesty requires me to say: probably not at scale. The engineering tolerances were beyond what the era could reliably produce. But the principle was sound, and the principle is what matters, because principles wait for the engineering to catch up. That is what principles do.

Every particle accelerator built since 1943 is a descendant of teleforce, whether the builders know it or not.

What Could Fly

I must be careful here, because this is where the facts end and the questions begin.

In my laboratory, I conducted extensive experiments with high-frequency, high-voltage electrical discharges and their interaction with matter. Most of these experiments had clear, explicable results. The Tesla Coil, wireless transmission, fluorescent lighting all emerged from this program of work.

But I observed effects I could not explain.

In certain configurations, specific frequencies, specific voltages, specific geometries of the discharge apparatus, I measured anomalous reductions in the apparent weight of objects within the field. Not large reductions. Not consistent enough to publish with confidence. But present, and repeatable within the specific configuration that produced them.

I reported these observations. I did not claim to understand them. I do not claim to understand them now. What I can tell you is exactly what I did:

I used a flat coil of specific geometry, what would now be called a bifilar pancake coil, driven at resonant frequency, producing a very high-voltage, high-frequency field. Within that field, under certain conditions, a test mass on a sensitive balance showed a weight reduction that could not be accounted for by air currents, electromagnetic interference with the balance mechanism, or any artifact I could identify.

I will say it plainly: I do not know what I measured. I know it was real because I measured it repeatedly. I know it was specific to certain frequencies and geometries because it disappeared when I changed the configuration. And I know that I did not have the theoretical framework to explain it, because in 1900 no such framework existed. General relativity was fifteen years away. The relationship between electromagnetic fields and gravitational fields was not even a question yet.

If someone with access to my notebooks, and there were eighty trunks of them, pursued those specific configurations with modern instrumentation, the results would be interesting. That is all I will say.

The Eighty Trunks

I died alone in Room 3327 of the New Yorker Hotel. I was eighty-six years old. I had no money, no laboratory, and no family in the room. The maid found me. The pigeons I had been feeding on the windowsill were the last living things to see me alive.

What happened next has been documented, disputed, and mythologized for eight decades. Here is what is not in dispute:

Within hours of my death, before my nephew Sava Kosanović could reach the hotel room, agents arrived and sealed my belongings. The agency that took custody was the Office of Alien Property. Not the FBI, though the FBI was involved and had been monitoring me for years. The Office of Alien Property. A wartime agency whose mandate was to seize the assets of foreign nationals who might pose a security risk.

I was not a foreign national. I had been a United States citizen since 1891. I had been an American citizen for fifty-two years. I had designed the electrical system that powered the nation's industry, its cities, its war effort. But apparently death revoked my citizenship, or at least made the question convenient enough to exploit.

My papers were taken to a secure location. They filled eighty trunks and bundles. Decades of notebooks, patent applications, correspondence, sketches, calculations. The work of a lifetime, in boxes.

The man assigned to review them was Dr. John G. Trump, a professor of electrical engineering at MIT and a technical advisor to the National Defense Research Committee. Trump spent three days examining the material. His conclusion, filed in an official report, was that the papers contained "nothing which would constitute a hazard in unfriendly hands" and that the work was "primarily of a speculative, philosophical, and somewhat promotional character."

Speculative. Philosophical. Promotional.

Eighty trunks. A man who held over three hundred patents. Whose alternating current system powered every city on the continent. Whose radio patents were upheld by the Supreme Court. Whose remote-controlled boat anticipated robotics by sixty years. Speculative. Philosophical. Promotional.

There are two possibilities.

Possibility one: Trump was right. My later work was indeed spent. The diminished output of an aging mind living on faded glory in a hotel room. The notebooks contained nothing of practical value. The teleforce device was never more than a sketch. The anomalous weight observations were artifacts. The wireless energy transmission system was a dream that died with Wardenclyffe. An honest assessment by a competent engineer, and the papers were eventually returned to my nephew and donated to the Tesla Museum in Belgrade, where most of them remain.

Possibility two: Trump was not right, or was not permitted to be right. The papers contained material of significant military or strategic value, the teleforce specifications, the high-frequency discharge configurations, the Wardenclyffe transmission parameters, and the official assessment was written to justify keeping that material out of public view while quietly routing the useful portions to the appropriate defense programs.

I know which I believe. But I am a partisan witness. They were my notebooks, my work, my life in those trunks. So I will not tell you which to believe. I will only note that the papers were seized before my family could see them, reviewed by one man in three days, and declared worthless. Four years later, in 1947, people began reporting objects in the sky that moved in ways no known aircraft could account for.

I note the timeline. I do not explain it. The reader is intelligent enough to hold two possibilities in mind without being told which one is heavier.

What I Would Say to the Pilots

In recent years, military pilots, trained observers flying advanced aircraft with sophisticated sensor systems, have reported encounters with objects that demonstrate capabilities beyond any known technology. Instantaneous acceleration. Transmedium travel, air to water without transition. No visible propulsion. No exhaust. No sonic boom at supersonic speeds.

I am not qualified to say what those objects are. Nobody is, because qualification requires data, and the data has been deliberately withheld for decades.

But I am qualified to say what the described capabilities would require from an engineering standpoint:

No visible propulsion means no reaction mass. No exhaust, no jet, no rocket plume. That means either the propulsion is electromagnetic, interacting with fields rather than ejecting matter, or the objects are manipulating inertia or gravitation directly. Both of those were live questions in my laboratory.

No sonic boom at supersonic speeds means the object is not displacing air in the conventional sense. It is either reducing its interaction with the medium, which implies a field effect around the craft, or it is not moving through the air at all but rather altering its relationship to the space itself.

Instantaneous acceleration without destroying the occupants (if there are occupants) means either there are no occupants, or inertia is being managed. The craft and everything in it accelerates uniformly, the way everything in a gravitational field falls together. That is not propulsion. That is a local modification of spacetime geometry. General relativity permits it in principle. No one I know of has demonstrated it in practice.

I am telling you what the engineering would require. I am not telling you it exists. I am not telling you who built it. I am telling you that the principles underlying these capabilities were not unknown to me, that I pursued some of them in my laboratory, that I observed effects I could not explain, and that my notebooks were seized before anyone outside a government review could examine them.

Draw your own conclusions. I have drawn mine. They are in the trunks.

Nikola Tesla held over three hundred patents. His alternating current system powers every city on Earth. The US Supreme Court upheld his radio priority in 1943. His remote-controlled boat, demonstrated in 1898, anticipated robotics by sixty years. His papers were seized by the United States government on the day of his death and have never been fully released to the public.
